City of Sarasota
Home MenuWe have many current efforts to make city operations and our buildings more efficient. Here are some of our current sustainability-related projections, policies, or programs for internal operations.
Renewable Energy Agreement - Florida Power and Light and the City of Sarasota have a renewable energy agreement. FPL installed a solar installation on the roof of Save our Seabirds and Bay Haven elementary school at no cost. The agreement is available upon request at sustainability@sarasotafl.gov.
100 Percent Renewable Energy – The City Commission has committed to using 100 percent renewable energy for city operations by 2030 and 50% by 2024. The City is now launching a planning process for rooftop solar on city buildings along with feasibility assessments.
Fleet – We make every effort to manage our city-owned vehicles responsibly. The city set a goal in the summer of 2019 to convert 90 percent of all new fleet vehicle purchases to electric vehicles by 2024. An internal team has been formed to make this a reality. |
|
Greenhouse Gas Reduction – We have a goal to reduce all greenhouse gas emissions from city operations by 25% by 2030 from a 2003 baseline. Good news is that based on our most recent inventory we are well on our way to reaching our target. Check out our Climate Change webpage for more information. |
|
Green Buildings – The Sarasota Police Department Building, the Robert L Taylor Community Center, and the Palm Avenue Parking Garage are LEED-certified green buildings. They are designed and built to meet Park Smart certification and have solar panels on their roofs.
Greenspace – There are over 50 parks and open spaces in the city. Our parks and recreation department will work to manage them better and improve service. We also have a Downtown Greenspace Policy that promotes compact, mixed-use development.
