From Memorial Day through Labor Day, all Florida bridges, including the Ringling Causeway Bridge, will be illuminated in red, white, and blue. This initiative, announced by FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue on May 8 via X (formerly known as Twitter), is part of the State’s "freedom summer" celebration. Additionally, it coincides with Governor Ron DeSantis's new sales tax holiday, which from July will exempt outdoor recreation equipment and admissions to state parks and museums from sales tax.
Please note, due to this State directive, the lighting schemes previously approved by the City for special recognition during these dates will not be provided, as the State maintains control over the bridge lighting during this period. This is State wide lighting scheme for all state bridges.

Each year, the City of Sarasota Commissioner's Office identifies and approves a special lighting schedule for the Ringling Bridge. The Commission adopted Resolution No.24R-3224 on December 4, 2023, which signals the City of Sarasota's support of FDOT lighting the Ringling Causeway Bridge in the recognition of the days identified.
Lighting will occur 30 minutes after sunset and will end 30 minutes after sunrise.
Bridge light request criteria:
- Requests must be sent to commissioners@sarasotafl.gov by September 5th at 5:00pm to be considered for the following year.
- All requests must be made by an organization local to the City of Sarasota.
- Please include detailed information about your cause or organization and your reason for the request.
- Specify colors that will illuminate the bridge.
- Please include your preferred dates for the lighting, not to exceed 7 consecutive days. The dates for your cause cannot overlap with dates already included in the current year's bridge light schedule; previously approved will not be modified.
