Project Description 

The Legacy Trail to Bobby Jones project was a trail extension project that would connect the Legacy Trail to Bobby Jones Golf Course and Sarasota County's 17th Street Park. The City of Sarasota worked with Kittelson and Associates to study the area of the proposed alignments to accurately determine the alignment. 

As part of the Pre-Study, two alignments were proposed for the connector from the current Legacy Trail alignment to the BJGC. The first alignment (shown in orange) is located along a old railroad property now owned by the City and County, providing a safe, alternative route for pedestrians, bicyclists, and micromobility opportunities to access essential services, parks, and other amenities. The second alignment (shown in blue) is along Beneva Road, a high-speed/volume arterial with a history of pedestrian/bicycle crashes. The Pre-Study focused on the alignments south of Fruitville Road first.

A final report and technical memorandum has been published below to provide information regarding the Pre-Study and the next steps for the project.

Project History

The City of Sarasota’s Transportation Master Plan, Sarasota in Motion (SiM) identified trails network expansion as the #1 priority. As part of this plan, the City has developed the Legacy Trail Network where Legacy Trail to Bobby Jones Golf Course (BJGC) was one of the primary connectors. The BJGC connector is part of the Gulf Coast Trail found in the Florida Department of Environmental Protection – Office of Greenways and Trails map. This trail would connect residents and tourists from Venice, FL to the City of Sarasota, Sarasota County, and eventually be part of Florida’s regional trail system. The City Commission has adopted a plan to turn a large portion of BJGC into a nature park and conservation area where the City has an opportunity to connect BJGC with Sarasota County’s 17th Street Park by using this trail system.

Right-of-Way Surveying Notice

The City of Sarasota is working with Kittelson and Associates as well as George F. Young to review and survey a City of Sarasota and Sarasota County drainage easement abutting properties in the Eastwood Park neighborhood.

Project Limits:

Legacy Trail approx. 200ft east of Beneva Rd. Heading north through the City Property and County drainage easement to Fruitville Rd.

Aug. 16, 2023 to mid-November
